Let me make something clear right from the start. I love inspirational movies as much as anyone. Hell, in this time of haunting reels, great cinematic experiences feel more essential than ever. That’s why it’s so disappointing 2 hearts, which is based on a true story and includes not one but two wholesome love stories involving very attractive human beings, proves to be fake and manipulative. This is the kind of movie for which the term “tear shooter” was invented, but this type of films startles them so intensely that you may need medical attention afterward.
The story is narrated by one of the main characters, Chris (Jacob Elordi, who touched the hearts of teenage girls in Netflix’s Kissing booth), a college freshman “meets cute” and quickly falls in love with the lively student Sam (Tera Skovbye). A parallel story involves Cuban rum dynasty heir Jorge, first shown as a boy collapsing on the football field and later diagnosed with a debilitating lung disease; His doctor informed his parents that he would not live past the age of majority.
Sometimes two is not greater than one.
It’s no wonder that Jorge, despite all the hardships, became an impossibly handsome man (Adan Canto, Designated Survivor, Narcos) the only clues to his serious illness were a large scar on his torso and a persistent cough. In fact, a cough so persistent that you start to suspect that he spent his childhood obsessively watching Greta Garbo in Camille. He also finds love, in the form of Grace (Radha Mitchell, Man on Fire, shack), a Pan Am flight attendant who thought nothing of holding the frightened Jorge’s hand during a routine take-off. (Before you send angry reminders about using the archaic term “hostess” instead of flight attendant, remember that the story of Jorge and Grace happens decades before Chris and Sam. Yes. maybe the reference to Pan Am isn’t enough. Clues?)
Coupled love stories are depicted in alternating scenes that compete for mediocrity and predictability. Chris and Sam laugh so hard at each other, in such an upbeat, hilarious way that many adult audiences will only vaguely remember their own teenage romances. Meanwhile, Jorge and Grace enjoy the kind of love whirlwind that ranges from spontaneous getaways to luxury beach resorts, which only a lot of money can buy.
By the time Chris, who had a nasty habit of pretending to suddenly fall in a pile, collapsed for real and was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm, it was easy to see where the story was going. Actually, that’s not fair. It’s easy to tell what the story will be in the first few minutes. Suffice it to say that there are no spoiler warnings to indicate that the main feeling you will probably leave 2 hearts It is an urgent desire to mark that organ donation box on your driver’s license. (Speaking of which, can we call an end to cinematic romances using body parts as a major plot device? last Christmaslooks like Hollywood is trying to move its business model to the black market.)
There is a powerfully moving true story at the heart of 2 hearts, and despite its formulaic manipulations, the film’s final act is sure to bring some viewers to tears. After all, who doesn’t think it’s a good idea to tell the people you love how you feel about them while they’re still around? Often, that realization only comes when it’s too late. The good news is that if you skip this movie, you’ll have a few more hours to do it right now.
