[This story contains spoilers for Avengers: Endgame.]
Since 2008 Iron Man, every Marvel Studios movie has at least one post-credits scene that teases what’s to come. That is, until now.
Avengers: Endgame, ending the story of some of the characters fans have followed throughout the 22 films, with no post-credits scenes. But there’s something there. After the credits ended, the screen went dark, revealing only the Marvel Studios logo supported by a ringing metallic sound – like someone was banging something.
Is Marvel trying to tell the audience something subtly?
Perhaps the sound was someone hammering a new hammer. The last time we saw Thor’s hammer Mjolnir (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans) disappeared into the past with it. When he returned as an old man, Thor’s iconic weapon was gone. Maybe someone used, made, or modified the space engine? Loki (Tom Hiddleston) escaped with the Space Stone and is about to get his own Disney+ series, so that’s a possibility.
Another is Beta Ray Bill, the alien equivalent of Thor – and former Champion of Sakaar – who was created by comic book legend Walt Simonson. Perhaps Beta Ray Bill has noticed the lack of worthy heroes in the universe and is building weapons to help him take Odinson’s place. Or perhaps after making Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) king of Asgard, Thor decides she needs an epic weapon and will make her a hammer of his own.
Another option is that instead of this sound being in the future, it could be a sound from the past. After all, where did Captain America get that new shield for Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie)? His own shield was destroyed by Thanos (Josh Brolin). Maybe the sound we hear is someone tampering with that shield.
Or what about Iron Man?
With Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) no longer there to take on the role of Iron Man, that space is wide open and the comic books have presented many options for his replacement. In Invincible Iron Man Vol. 2 # 7, readers were introduced to Riri Williams, a young and brilliant engineer who would assume the mantle before becoming her own hero known as Ironheart. If Marvel wants to plant the seeds for the next series of heroes, there’s a chance they could put Riri on top, and perhaps the hammering was her creation of her first suit after learning of Tony Stark’s death. .
Of course, there has been James Rhodes (Don Cheadle), who has kept the Iron Man jacket in the comics for quite some time and would be the likely choice to replace Tony. In that case, perhaps the hammering was someone sewing a new suit for Rhodey. However, given the idea of a new hero alliance, the person wearing this hypothetical suit could be the leader of the original Young Avengers, Nathaniel Richards. The young hero took the name Iron Lad when he formed the group in the 2005 series of the same name.
Nathaniel is the son of Fantastic Four leaders Reed Richards and Sue Storm, characters that were no longer restricted to Marvel Studios until recently.
Now that the Disney-Fox merger is complete, this hammering could be a way to hint at the inclusion of some previously untouchable characters that the MCU will use in the future. With Thanos now dead, Marvel will need a new big bad guy, and there’s hardly one bigger and worse than Doctor Victor Von Doom. In case you’re not too familiar with the Latveria royal, he’s probably best known as the main antagonist of the Fantastic Four. He wears an iconic suit of armor with a metal badass mask.
What if after the demise of the Avengers and all of their times interfering with each other, Doom found his way to the core reality of the MCU and decided it was the perfect time to take over their measured world? In that case, what the audience hears might be the villain crafting his famous mask. That might seem a bit outrageous, but it opens the door for the Fantastic Four, who deserve to play an important role in the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Whatever the sound – this sounds a lot like Tony forging his armor from the first movie – Marvel still keeps fans guessing. If there’s one thing Marvel has proven over the past decade, it’s that studios rarely make unintentional choices, so don’t be surprised if weird and unusual noises have a big impact in the years to come. .
