Film Editor and Son of Rod Lurie Was 27 – The Hollywood Reporter

Hunter Lurie, a rising film editor and son of Hollywood writer and director Rod Lurie and Gretchen Lurie, admissions director at Chandler School in Pasadena, has died. He’s 27 years old.

Lurie, who had worked for Union Editorial as an assistant ad editor for multiple major accounts, died suddenly Monday at Mercy Health Hospital in Muskegon, Michigan, after a cardiac arrest while attending The Electric Forest Festival in nearby Rothbury, his father said.

Born on October 6, 1990, Hunter Lurie graduated in 2009 from Campbell Hall School in Studio City, where he was a member of the varsity cross country team. Four years later, he graduated from the SI Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University with a bachelor’s degree in television, radio and film.

Lurie went to work at the Los Angeles office of Union Editorial, a company that edited commercials, music videos, trailers, and films, and he rose from vault manager to assistant editor.

He has worked on commercials for the likes of Apple, Honda, Lexus, Adidas and Fox Sports but is most proud of his involvement with the Imagine Friends campaign, a series of 20 animated short films created for the Pediatric Brain Oncology Foundation to explore a variety of cancer-related topics for children facing that diagnosis. The campaign was awarded two golden lions last month Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, which has previously received nominations for the Annie Award and other awards.

Lurie also had small roles in her father’s films The Last Castle (2001), Straw dog (2011) and Kill Reagan (2016) and on TV series Line of fire and Hell on wheels.

Rod Lurie said: “Hunter’s death was devastating to not only our family, but the entire universe Hunter lived in. The Hollywood Reporter. “He is absolutely beloved and the encyclopedia for anything cinematic. The world of commercial film editing has lost one of its rising stars. We have lost the light of our lives.”
