Liam Neeson Talks His Star Wars Qui-Gon Jinn Return

Qui-Gon Jinn is back.

Star Wars fans were outraged on Wednesday when Liam Neeson made his return to a galaxy far, far away in the series’ finale. Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+.

In the closing moments of Star Wars miniseries, Neeson returns to the franchise for the first time since Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) as Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn (in live-action form; he also voices the character in Star Wars: Clone Wars). Ever since the episode came out, it’s been teased that Qui-Gon might appear, but never with any guarantees. And with how much time has passed since Neeson last played the character, it’s hard to determine if he’d be interested in wearing his Jedi cape again.

The Academy Award-nominated actor told The Hollywood Reporter that he decided to return to the franchise for some reason.

“I definitely don’t want anyone else to play Qui-Gon Jinn, and I want to show my respect to George [Lucas] and the mythical world he created,” said Neeson CHEAP. “Moreover, Ewan [McGregor] is a friend, and I enjoy working with him in The Phantom Menace 25 years ago.”

In the 1999 film, Qui-Gon is Obi-Wan’s master, and through a series of events, the Jedi pair find Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) on Tatooine. Not long after helping to protect Anakin’s freedom, Qui-Gon is killed in a gunfight with Darth Maul (Ray Park).

Neeson has noted in previous years that he’s always been a fan of the film, and moderated the initial criticism, which later subsided, with a generation of fans quite fond of it. The Phantom Menace, Attack of the clones and Sith’s Revenge.

“I love [Phantom Menace],” Neeson told Andy Cohen on SiriusXM Radio Andy in 2020. “I am proud of it and proud to have been a part of it. I have to become a Jedi. I got to play with those lights and all those wonderful things. It’s amazing, Andy, it really is. “
