“One That Represents All States and All Of Us

Macy Gray is proposing that the American flag be redesigned to represent its diverse population.

The Grammy-winning singer, 53, wrote an op-ed for Market Watch in which she suggested that the flag “no longer represents democracy and freedom”.

Gray starts with some background. “The Confederate battle flag, created as a symbol against the abolition of slavery, has been very tired lately. We don’t see it much anymore.” She then referred to the Capitol riots on January 6, “when bonfires poured rain on the nation’s most precious hut, waving Old Glory – memo was received: leaves American flag is its replacement.”

Addressing President Biden, vp Kamala Harris, and members of Congress, Gray wrote that the American flag “has been hacked as code for a particular belief. God bless those believers, they may have.” She added that, like the Confederacy, the flag is “torn, dated, divisive and inaccurate” and no longer represents everyone.

“It’s not fair to be forced to honor it,” Gray wrote. “Time for a new flag.”

Regarding the stripes of the flag, Gray wrote the Smithsonian document how the white stripes represent purity and innocence. Gray wrote: “America is great. “It’s beautiful. Pure, it’s not. It’s broken and in pieces.” She asked, “What if the stripes were OFF-white?”

Gray argued that the flag should include 52 stars, D.C. and Puerto Rico among them — which she noted has been lobbying for statehood for decades.

Proposing a redesign of the stars, Gray asked, “What if stars were the color of ALL of us – your skin tone and mine – like the melanin scale? Blue squares represent vigilance and perseverance; and the red stripes represent bravery. America is all of that.”

Gray introduced into her selection a visual re-imagining of the flag with updated star colors and off-white stripes.

Gray writes: “Sixty-two years later, in 2021, we’ve changed and it’s time for a reset, a transformation. “One that represents all the states and all of us.”

In response to the op-ed, which received mixed reviews on social media, the male singer trended on Twitter for most of Saturday, June 19 – known as June 16 – during That Biden signed legislation on Thursday to establish it as a Federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery.
