Pioneering Comic, Actor Dies 79

Paul Mooney, a pioneering comic book author, writer and actor, has passed away, his agent, Cassandra Williams, said. The Hollywood Reporter. He was 79 years old.

Mooney died at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday at her home in Oakland, California.

In addition to doing her own material, Mooney is also known as the screenwriter for the late comedian Richard Pryor. Mooney was introduced to a whole new generation of fans as he appeared multiple times on Chappelle’s Show, including the classic segment, “Ask a Black Guy”. Mooney has many movie credits, including playing the legendary Sam Cooke in The Story of Best Friend Holly (1978).

He’s been a staple of our industry, the godfather of many of our careers and the father of the unique comedy-drama as we know it. He will be really missed. Make God Laugh, Paul,” Los Angeles comedy landmark, The Laugh Factory, wrote on Twitter.

His birth name is Paul Gladney, Mooney was born in 1941 in Shreveport, Louisiana. After discovering he had a knack for comedy and writing, Mooney moved to Hollywood, where he would thrive as a writer for classic TV shows like Sanford and Son and Good times. Mooney also wrote some of the routines that Pryor does for his iconic albums, including Live on the Sunset Strip and Is that what I said. Mooney is also the main writer for the hit classic for a short time The Richard Pryor Show. He also had a brief stint as a writer on In Live Color.

“The great RIP Paul Mooney. It’s been an honor to be the one to support the students in the room for his master classes at night while I am the doorman during the day,” Marc Maron shared on Twitter.

Eddie Murphy caused the house to fall apart when, in early March, he recalled the story of first meeting Mooney when Murphy’s star took off thanks to Saturday night live.

Murphy explained that there was an incident at The Comedy Store in the ’80s that started when he was “lighted” to finish the evening one evening. “I’m like a freshman SNL and I was killing people, and I said, ‘Are they giving me light?’ I was only up 10 minutes,” Murphy said. He was told Mooney was coming next, and not knowing who it was at the time, Murphy asked the audience which one they wanted to hear from. He then continued walking for another hour, Murphy said.

Murphy, who was traveling with director John Landis, then went outside, where he was approached by Mooney, who wanted to hear part of his set, Murphy recalled. “I said, ‘I don’t do my routine in the parking lot.’ And he said, ‘Fuck you, and fuck you, white man. If I had a gun, I would shoot both of you. ‘”

Chappelle on Wednesday afternoon told TMZ, “I want to shout out to every comedian on Earth, the best of them have done it, paved the way for today, his legacy will live on.
