Selena Gomez Opens Up About Mental Health Struggles, Bipolar Diagnosis

Selena Gomez is sharing her bipolar diagnosis and reflecting on how the “nasty” rumors surrounding her mental health treatment have affected her.

In one Elle cover story fifth edition, The 29-year-old actress and singer said she was affected by some reactions when she entered a psychiatric facility in 2014 after being diagnosed with lupus. “I don’t even know what they really believe I’m doing – drugs, alcohol, running around, partying. She said. Gomez will finally undergo a kidney transplant in 2017.

Gomez went on to explain that growing up in the public eye and enduring scrutiny has always made her feel “like an object” and “raw,” while her physical illness also affected her. “My lupus, a kidney transplant, chemotherapy, having a mental illness, going through heartbreaks in public – those are all things that should have brought me down,” she explains. “Every time I go through something, I say, ‘What else? What else will I have to deal with? ‘”

Gomez has long been outspoken about her battle with anxiety and depression and revealed last year that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. On her diagnosis, Gomez reflects: “I felt a huge weight on me when I found out. I can take a deep breath and say, “OK, that explains a lot.”

After much struggle, she explains that helping people “is really what keeps me going.” She said, “There may have been a time when I wasn’t strong enough and did something to hurt myself.”

Gomez has continued to seek out philanthropic work and pledged that in the future she hopes to add a “philanthropic side” to all of her projects: “If something good doesn’t come out, I won’t do that. I do not need money “.

After two seasons, her HBO Max cooking show Selena + Chef raised $360,000 for 23 nonprofits. Meanwhile, her Rare Beauty brand includes the Rare Impact Foundation, which aims to raise $100 million for mental health services over the next 10 years.

Gomez also shared that she stopped using social media because she could not find the “purpose” of posting photos. In 2017, she let her assistant control her social media accounts, however, Gomez still contributed photos and quotes. The decision allows her to take control of her mental health: “This tiny phone has 150 million users – I just have to put it down,” she said. “It was a relief for me.” Now, she does things the old-fashioned way – phone her friends – instead of waiting to hear about their lives through Instagram.

“I don’t have it on my phone, so there’s no temptation,” she shared. “I suddenly had to learn to live with myself.”

Gomez will soon appear alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short in the Hulu comedy There are only murders in the buildingpremieres on August 31.
