‘Station 19’ Bids Farewell to an Original Star

[This story contains spoilers from episode 505, “Things We Lost in the Fire,” of ABC’s Station 19.]

As advertised, not everyone survives Thursday Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy intersection.

ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy firefighters said an emotional farewell to Okieriete Onaodowan, best known as the casual Dean Miller of the original series.

Crossover explores how both firefighters at Station 19 and officers at Gray Sloan react to a gas explosion in a residential area. Dean, who is considering leaving Seattle with his daughter to find work in Oakland, saves Vic’s life (Barrett Doss) after she is electrocuted to death by a stray power line. Dean then continues to search for survivors and eventually those injured when the second house explodes.

Despite the best efforts of Ben (Jason George), Dean dies of his injuries in the explosion when Vic learns of his fate in the Grey’s Anatomy part of the intersection. In the end, Ben and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) are left in the care of Dean’s young daughter.

“It’s a pleasure to be Dean. I have Shonda Rhimes, [Station 19 creator] Stacy McKee, Krista Vernoff, [director] Paris Barclay and ABC to thank for allowing me to bring him to life,” Onaodowan said in a statement Thursday. “I am so grateful to have worked with the most loving, kind and dedicated staff in network television. And most importantly, thank you to the fans for giving Dean so much love. I hope he inspired you to change your world for the better. Be the changer! “

Onaodowan is coming Station 19 from Broadway, where he got his start as James Madison and Hercules Mulligan in Hamilton. He replaces Josh Groban as Pierre in Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 before kicking off the musical in late 2017.

“I am a better artist and person because I had the opportunity to work with Okieriete Onaodowan,” Gray’s and Station 19 showrunner Vernoff said in a statement. “I am heartbroken over the passing of Dean Miller and I can no longer write for Oak. Oak has an open mind and is always ready and hungry for new artistic horizons – and I can’t wait to see what he does next. It will be strong, it will be deep, and it will be courageous because Oak is all of that. “

Onaodowan becomes the latest original Station 19 star to escape. Alberto Frezza’s Ryan Tanner and Miguel Sandoval’s Pruitt Herrera – who were named for Dean’s daughter – were both killed in season three.

Vernoff took over creator McKee after season two.
