Patrick J. Adams is ready for his next act.
After seven seasons Suit, The SAG Award-nominated actor officially exits the US Network legal drama “Blue Sky”.
Actor who played Mike Ross in over 100 episodes of Aaron Created by Korsh series, will debut on his own terms and will officially leave the show when the seventh season ends this year. The final eight episodes of season seven returned on March 28, and the series was refreshed for an eighth season as Dule Hill has been regularly upgraded to help fill the void created by Adams and co-star Meghan Markle’s start.
“You don’t often meet someone who changes your life, and that’s exactly what Patrick did.” Korsh tell The Hollywood Reporter. “He changed my life for the better. We are a family on Suit, on the screen and off. And although Mike Ross and Patrick Adams are both moving on, as far as I’m concerned, they will always be part of my family. “
Here, Adams talks exclusively with CHEAP about knowing the right time to leave, the unspoken decision with Markle (who plays Mike’s bride and has her own royal wedding to plan) and what’s next.
What prompted you to decide to leave? Suit?
After seven seasons – really eight years away from home and away from my now wife [Adams married Pretty Little Liars alum Troian Bellisario in December 2016] and there’s that pressure. I started thinking about leaving at the end of the first half of season six, after Mike got out of prison. From the point of view of the story, I’m a bit unsure what he’s supposed to do. Mike pledged during the trial that if he was allowed to continue to practice law, he would devote his time and energy to the underrepresented and underrepresented, the company’s interests. I’m not sure how we’re going to get that version of the character into the fabric of the show. Aaron Korsh and I talked about it and he presented this idea about Harvey (Gabriel Yacht) offers a buy-one deal that keeps Mike working at the company so he can gather resources to go and do more advocacy cases. That made for an enjoyable seventh season. And I’m proud of how this season has turned out.
You know when the seventh season will be?
Half way through. When we started talking about contract renegotiation [for season eight and beyond], I took some time. Everyone was going ahead and I stopped and said, “We need to think about this because this is my time and more of my life – and what’s the story left to tell?” When I look at the work I’m doing, Mike’s going to be a full-fledged, certified, legal lawyer. It’s been a long way since we met him and he’s a great chef with no real prospects. I think we’ll go far and now Mike is going to be a lawyer and he’s engaged to the woman of his dreams and he has the means and the opportunity to do anything he can imagine. . I have this voice in my head that we told his story and if he dated longer, Mike would be another lawyer on television. That doesn’t suit him. It also doesn’t feel right for where I am in my life. I started chatting with Aaron and we both decided [Adams leaving] meaningful, sad, and scary as it is. It just feels like it’s the way to go.
Are you worried about offending fans of the show?
There’s always the fear that you’ve somehow let down or will disappoint millions of fans around the world when really, your reason for doing it is to honor the work you’ve done in the past. past seven years. Just because something stops for me doesn’t mean the show doesn’t have much to do. I’m just a part of it from here on out is not right.
How was your conversation with Aaron? Is he surprised?
When this became a reality, we had this wonderful 3 hour conversation where we talked about doing what you’re proud of and how you decided to move on from something important. important in your life. We discussed how we would like to see Mike go and how to do justice to all of that. Aaron and I spent seven years working on this and it was a real opportunity to say our goodbyes to this chapter of our relationship.
Did you and Meghan talk about your exit times?
With Meghan, a lot remains unanswered. Meghan has this whole crazy part of her life just beginning now. In a way, Meghan and I are the closest because we’re the youngest in the cast and both joined with the least experience. We grew up together during the show. There was this natural feeling that we both knew it was time for both of us. It’s wordless and we’re just enjoying the last few episodes that we had to shoot. We both know we won’t be back. It makes each of our scenes that much more special. We had a wonderful time. We can laugh about it. Even the things that might have let us down about the show, they became things where we could laugh out loud and compare notes about how crazy this has become.
Mike and Rachel are headed to a wedding in the second half of season seven. Without spoiling anything, will they have their fairy tale ending? Not many actors who exit their shows get a chance to end things happily.
A lot of times when the actors leave the show, a gun is drawn in the courtroom or something. Without spoiling too much, yes, I think Mike and Rachel are two characters that have never had any question that they are in love and that they are meant for each other and that they are willing to sacrifice and sacrifice. a ton to keep their relationship going. It just so happens that my moment feels like [about leaving Suits] and what was going on in Meghan’s life created an opportunity without having to cause some conflict or tear Mike and Rachel apart. It allows us to continue whatever happens next for Mike and Rachel together.
Will it be a happy wedding?
The only thing I can say is that you should really watch episode 16.
With Meghan and Mike’s engagements and where are Rachel as they move towards their wedding, will there be any nod to her royal engagement?
No. Aaron has always actively avoided any kind of real-life commentary. He actively wanted to keep those two worlds completely separate. People can draw their own conclusions and comparisons. The last season of Suit really special in that we didn’t let anything enter our world.
The show has just been officially renewed for an eighth season. Are you ready to come back? Suit in some future possibility?
I said my goodbyes to Mike and Suit, but I never closed any doors. When the time comes, if it feels like the right thing to do, I’ll definitely be open to it. I love and cherish my time on this program, and the past seven years have been some of the most challenging and transformative of my entire life. I owe it to the entire cast, crew, everyone at USA Network and at [producers] Manufacture of universal and hypnotic cables. If it feels right to bring Mike back to great success Bye, then that’s something I can open up to. But hopefully I’ll be too busy at the time to make it, and then I’ll have to figure it out.
What’s next for you?
For now, I want to rest. It’s nice to be at home. It’s really nice to be around Troian, our dogs, and took the time to figure out exactly what shape I wanted to pursue my career in later. Acting, I’ve learned over the past seven years, takes a lot out of your life. I need to make sure that the next thing I do is something that I can actually own and grow, and how long I can continue to invest and be interested in the particular project. There are also a couple of great stories that I’m trying to develop for release and promotion. But behind the camera work is what appeals to me. After seven years in this program, I feel truly empowered and able to take on more leadership roles and get things done.
Do you want to sign a master agreement?
I’m making a lot of offers and figuring out what’s next. The projects I’m interested in developing at the moment are very specific, so I’m looking into how you find homes for those projects and what is the process and synced with permissions MC and manufacturers. But for now, it’s like a kid back. It’s fun; It’s like a whole new beginning.
Adams and Markle’s the last episode of Suit will air as a two-hour season finale, taking place on April 25 on the USA Network.
