Taylor Lautner is looking back at the fame he experienced while starring in Sunset movie franchise.
In a live interview on Today on Thursday, the actor reflected on getting noticed at the age of 16 and then getting noticed after starring in a five-film series as friends with Bella Swan and werewolf Jacob Black. The films were adapted from Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling novels and built a community of their own, grossing over $3 billion at the box office. Amid the film’s success, Lautner explained that popularity would become overwhelming and he couldn’t “live a normal life” without being watched or recognized.
“There are not many things in life that can come and happen overnight. Fame can. It can also go away overnight. When I was 16, 17, 18, woke up and tried to go for a walk or date and I had 12 cars waiting outside my house to follow me wherever I went or to the airport. or anywhere, and you have thousands of screaming fans,” he told Jason Kennedy.
Lautner even admitted that for over 10 years, he wouldn’t go to the grocery store, the movie theater or the mall for fear of being recognized. When he finally visited a grocery story, he explained, “It feels like freedom.” “I was gone for so many years that I either didn’t leave my house, or if I did, put on a hat, and sunglasses, and was like, very scared,” Lautner said. “Where it accumulates something inside of me, I don’t know, but I’m scared to go out. I can’t wait to go out. So I just don’t. “
The final film in the Twilight series, Dawn: Part 2, released in 2012 and Lautner went on to star in Scream Queens but the level of attention has dropped. As popularity dwindles, Lautner admits he realizes how quickly things can disappear.
He explained, “In the meantime, it’s frustrating because you just want to live a normal life. But then when that’s gone, you start questioning yourself and you’re like ‘oh, don’t people care about me anymore?’ When it goes away for a bit, you notice it, and that’s the dangerous part because that can mess with your mind. “
After taking a break from the limelight and filming, Lautner said he feels “a lot better today than I have been in the last 4-5 years.” He credits his fiancée for having “played a big part” in guiding him to where he is today. Although he quipped that his fiancée was a “crazy fan of Team Edward” when Sunset film was released, “I rehabilitated her,” he joked.
When asked if “famous is worth it”, Lautner shared that years ago he wished he hadn’t experienced it but his opinion has since changed: “If you ask me now, now now I say ‘no.’ I’m happy for what it taught me. It made me who I am and I’m grateful for that.”
Lautner will co-star with Kevin James in the movie Home team streaming on Netflix on January 28.
