The Hair Donation Story – A Simple Gesture
Title: My Journey of Growing and Donating Long Hair to Cancer Patients
As a child, I was taught that "hair and teeth are the features of a person," and my father always said, "A girl looks beautiful with long hair." Because of this, I took great care of my long locks. Back in the day, we didn’t have the modern shampoos we rely on now. Instead, my family used soap barks to wash our hair. We would roast the soap nuts, then boil them with ingredients like pomelo leaves, lemongrass, and black basil from the garden, sometimes throwing in some citrus peels for fragrance. This concoction left my hair strong, thick, and lustrous.
Throughout my primary, secondary, and high school years, my friends always remembered me as the girl with long hair. In fact, during my senior year, my hair reached almost a meter long! My friend and I would often find ourselves playfully tying our hair together, causing humorous chaos when a teacher called on us to answer.
When I entered university, I lived in the old dorms of the medical university, which had creaky bunk beds and were often invaded by mice. It lacked many essentials, especially water. I vividly recall the late-night study sessions when my roommates and I would trudge down to the water tank in the courtyard to wash our hair, braving the freezing cold of winter. After long exposure to such conditions, my patience for maintaining long hair began to wane. One day, while cycling to class, I heard a seller shout, "Who has long hair to sell?" Without hesitation, I pulled over and had them cut off the cherished hair I had nurtured for years. That year, I sold my hair for 400,000 VND—an amount significant enough for me to go without needing my mother’s money for meals for a month.
Since then, although I have experimented with various hairstyles, I generally maintained my long, black hair. One day, while browsing the web, I stumbled upon an address accepting hair donations for cancer patients. Motivated by that discovery, I decided to grow my hair long once more, avoiding any styling treatments, with the intention of donating it. It’s not a grand gesture; simply knowing that I could bring joy to someone else made me happy. I still remember the brave eyes of the children at the pediatric hospital undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, fighting cancer with all their might. I hope that more people come to learn about this project so these children can become not only courageous warriors but also beautiful individuals.
Finally, I have fulfilled my heartfelt wish. I genuinely believe that giving love is a way to make love last forever. ❤️
