This story was created by The Hollywood Reporter’s marketing in collaboration with our partners at 101 Studios.

This past weekend, 101 Studios held a world premiere and press on Yellowstone prequel 1883, lives in Wynn Las Vegas. The series, created by Taylor Sheridan, will air on Paramount+ starting December 19, and stars real-life husband and wife Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as early settlers of the Dutton dynasty (later) Their descendants are described in modern times in Yellowstone by Kevin Costner’s John Dutton and Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton and their extended parents).

At Wynn Las Vegas before its premiere, McGraw talked about how he was preparing to play his character, James Dutton, and how dramatic locations in Montana and the high plains of Texas added authenticity. into the series and how difficult it is to maintain a character’s tacit sense of calm and control in the face of material hardship and opponents without being emotional.

Taylor Sheridan is known for shooting in some of the most glamorous locations. What role do locations play in the series?

The locations are a big part of the show, I think without these locations – seeing real mountains in Montana, seeing real high plains in Texas, seeing all that You see, context is as important as anything. I mean I’ve heard the camera guy say a few times, “God, we just point the camera in that direction and you guys say our lines and we’ve got a great picture.” That’s just the beauty of it.

Is there a place that stands out to you?

Well, Montana is beautiful. I love Montana. We had a handful of it after the cold and all the wind that we had there. But, for me, Montana is just a magical place and a beautiful place – it’s probably my favorite place.

Can you talk about how Mr. Sheridan was able to bring realism to the story and the scene?

Taylor is an authentic person. Even the way you ride – he’ll come and say, “You know, a cowboy wouldn’t have his feet in that position or his hands in that position.” He said, “I was just trying to make you look good. Everyone rides a little differently, and it’s okay to ride a little differently, but there are some things you need to be authentic about and true to. ” And he’s always been good at that, down to the design of the sets and the costumes. For me, when you walk on that set, I want to get there early, get dressed, and be on set for about an hour. hours before we start shooting. And it’s usually still dark. It’s always dark. But, walk around that world and live in that world for a while and try to feel what James would feel, try to feel. what immigrants and pioneers would feel, try to feel what Margaret [Dutton, played by Faith Hill] will feel, trying to get my daughter’s spirit [Elsa, played by Isabel May] and what she will feel. I really try and spend a lot of time doing that and trying to get into Taylor’s mind a little bit [in terms of] what he felt when he wrote it.

How did you prepare for the role of James Dutton?

Of course, I read some Western works, watched some Western works. More importantly, I read the script a lot and tried to dig through and summarize what I think about James’ plot and why he’s doing what he’s doing. And why is he heading where he’s headed. What motivated him to do that? Much to me is his experience in the Civil War and his experience in prison during the Civil War and probably what happened in the South after reconstruction – perhaps that’s largely what pushed him out of there, and I think he was looking for a secluded place to take his family.

What was the biggest challenge in playing that role?

The biggest challenge of playing James was honestly not crying. Because there are so many moments of being human, being a parent, and being a real person make it hard for me to hold back my tears. And James doesn’t do that.
