Tom Brady on Producing First Film and Going Viral Promoting Underwear Line

Anything Tom Brady touches makes a lot of headlines and that trend remains intact after Hollywood Reporter February story about 80 for Brady, his feature film debut as a producer. Confirmed as Brady prepares to retire from the NFL — he’s rejoined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to further cement his GOAT status — the film stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field for Directed by Kyle Marvin and Paramount Pictures. The story follows four best friends and New England Patriots fans who entered 2017’s Super Bowl LI to see their hero Brady in action. In an interview for his latest Hertz campaign, Brady shared how the project came to him, what it signaled about his Hollywood ambitions, and why he’s always aimed to “deliver the process.” level” for any project he touches.

Now that you’ve been doing business for Hertz a bit, what’s the process like or how much of your collaboration as a partner is?

I try to be super collaborative. I try to be involved from the start of the campaign to the very end and obviously, on camera, behind the camera, even in the post-production days to make sure everything goes the way we want and make sure guarantee that all the points have a great feeling about them. I enjoyed working with Hertz. They have a great leadership team. The past 18 months have been a real pleasure working together and seeing all of this come to life. We have a lot of exciting things ahead of us.

Now we are moving again, post COVID and people are traveling more and people will be looking for their rental. I love that Hertz has a fleet of new Shelby Mustangs and [Electric Vehicle] lines. It’s a very cool company that has been very proactive in being an industry leader in electric vehicles. I love the whole side of their business.

Did you get a chance to bring the Shelby Mustang out for a shoot?

I had one on set when we were filming about two months ago and I haven’t seen them since, so I’m a bit disappointed by that. No, I’m just joking. It was a great car. I have to get into it, but I don’t think they’ll be out in a few months. I know car enthusiasts will really enjoy driving them because they are incredible cars. I love the look and for the car lovers – they call them petrolheads or the like – they will love these Shelby Mustangs.

You debuted with Hertz as part of their new line of electric vehicles with Teslas. I know sustainability and green are very important in your family. Aside from driving a Tesla, what other ways do you practice being green in your life?

For us, it’s trying to combine everyday choices of eating habits, recycling as well as conscious choices about travel. We now have many EVs in our homes. We try to be very efficient. We build environmentally conscious homes with our energy consumption in mind. A lot of it is just an accumulation of everyday choices. My wife has done a lot for the environment and planted millions of trees, and she has been involved in many groups and activities that help raise awareness and consciousness for our daily activities. She is a true pioneer in our family and has taught me so much over the years. I have focused on everything with my blind people, and she has opened my eyes to so many things in life. She’s someone with an incredible commitment to the planet, and as a nurturer and a mother, she wants to make the world a great place for her kids.

Driving was also the focus of the first big Hollywood movie you produced, 80 for Brady. Can you talk about developing that project and what does it signal about your Hollywood ambitions?

There’s a lot of that. Working with my representative at WME, Jason Hodes, has really opened my eyes to the different possibilities in the media sector and we are currently working on a number of projects. This is our first feature film, and I’m more off-screen than on-screen. I got a few things done with Religion Sports when I partnered with Facebook to do it Tom vs Time. Then I teamed up with ESPN to do Man in the arena. I love being on camera for those, and I’m also a producer on those, but this is the first major motion picture I’ve produced.

An agent, Max, who worked with Jason, brought him the script, and Jason called me after he read it to say, “Look, I have this great script. It’s a great story and I think it has a lot of potential.” We’ve rewritten it many times and it’s in the hands of a wonderful woman, Donna Gigliotti, a wonderful producer. She brought Kyle [Marvin], our director. We found the most amazing actresses, Lily, Jane, Rita and Sally. They brought it all to life. At the end of the day, watching them perform and watching them perform is great. I had to bring along a few of my teammates on set, who were extremely important to me in life. We had two days when I was filming. It’s like a dressing room, you know, we really enjoyed it. I can’t wait to see how it turns out. It’s an interesting story with twists and turns and I think everyone will be happy to see the final product.

Now that you have one under your belt, will more products be made in the future?

Definitive. I definitely consider it a part of my future and get into the media and produce different projects and help bring them to life. I’ve always loved being able to tell these stories, and I’ve personally told them, I’ve been a part of so many of them. I love being involved. I don’t know what the future holds, but at the same time I know that I have a very active group of people working hard to bring great things to life.

You mentioned football at the start of the call. Now that you’re back, what’s new or different about your approach to this season?

Over the years, I’ve been trying to become more efficient at what I’m doing because I don’t have as much time to exercise as I used to. When I work out, it has to be super efficient with what I need to do to get the most out of the day. Staying in shape is super important, but it’s been my lifestyle for a while, so I don’t feel that I have to switch to anything else. That’s just part of what I do.

With my physical work, I try to keep my body super supple. I try to stay hydrated and keep my inflammation rate low. Then I have to throw the ball and do it well with my teammates. So I spend time with my teammates to make sure I’m on the same page as them, and that’s what my summer will be like for the next six weeks.

Back to your wife. The two of you went viral because of the video of her snapping you in your new Brady lingerie. Do you have any more partnership plans for underwear line?

You have to keep an eye on that, but there are a few challenges I’ve set that I have to meet. A few people challenged me online with some photos, so I had to review it. So we’ll see, we’ll see. I love how people have embraced it. Everything is off to a great start [with the brand], and I just want to get involved in great things and really entrust people. That’s one thing I’ve learned in football over the years through building a great team and seeing everything as you have to overdeliver. I want people to think of me as someone who always supports them. When people commit to me, I always want to go overboard and overdeliver. Whether it’s a lingerie line or a feature film, it has the same credibility and weight in my eyes.
