Veteran Character Actor Dies at 78

Vachik Mangassarian, an Armenian actor known for his television roles on CSI: Crime scene investigation, NCIS, Curb your enthusiasm and The leader’s minions, has died. He was 78 years old.

Mangassarian died in Burbank from complications related to COVID-19, his manager, Valerie McCaffrey of McCaffrey Talent Management, said. The Hollywood Reporter.

Born in Iran to Armenian descent, he immigrated to the US at the age of 23 and worked as a waiter in Los Angeles when he began his Hollywood career.

Besides theater work, he had early roles in Iranian films before landing his first American film role in Southern Sharks in 1978. Mangassarian played a father in Soraya’s stoningThe film stars Jim Caviezel and depicts the stoning of an Iranian woman.

He also appeared in the movie Lost and found in Armeniastars Angela Sarafyan and Jamie Kennedy in a landmark collaboration between Armenian and American actors.

Mangassarian most recently completed a supporting role in Paul Weitz’s new film Continuestarring Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda.

As a supporter of the Armenian community, he built his own radio station and a TV show, Armenian National Networkfor 10 years as he and his guests discussed politics, film, and art.

Survivors include his sisters, Linda Lalaian and Elda Hacopian.
