‘Westworld’ Orgy Scene Explained

In a single scene, Westworld ranks alongside HBO’s history of live sex scenes.

In the fifth episode of the series, called “Contrapasso“Guest William (Jimmi Simpson) and Logan (Ben Barnes), along with robot host Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood), encounter a new area of ​​the park: Pariah, a city rife with outcasts, delinquents, thieves, murderers, and all sorts of powerful hosts. For more, CHEAP spoke to Richard J. Lewis, who wearing an iron hat the show’s second episode, while also serving as the series’ co-executive producer and supervisor, on how Westworld The team brought both Pariah and one of the most vivid television sex scenes in recent memory.

How was the town of Pariah formed?

We’ve always talked about Pariah because it’s in the suburbs near the edge of the park – not quite on the edge, but close to it. Sweetwater is the hub of arrivals terminals, but the further you go – and we say this narrator – the more dangerous and corrupt and derelict the act becomes. Pariah, we’ve always wanted it to be a weird city that exists near the edge of the park, where you can get into a lot of trouble.

Indeed – and that’s exactly what William, Logan and Dolores find when they arrive.

Right. When we start thinking about it, we want it to feel unattainable. We want travel, whether it’s horseback riding or in a buggy or whatever, to be dangerous to some extent. We show Pariah from the point of view of this cemetery [which was shot in] Utah. It is located among these dangerous looking mountains. We want it to feel like it’s not only quite difficult to get to and from afar, but that you have a strong desire to go there and get there.

How about the culture of Pariah? For example, there is a street parade at night, and it seems to focus on celebrating the death…

We want it to be like a border town, to have a Tex-Mex feel it. We wanted it to land somewhere between American culture and Latino culture. We took inspiration from Buenos Aires and the really beautiful graveyards there. There are many Spanish flavors to this. Credit to our amazing production designer Zack Grobler for that. We did a lot of research and felt there was an almost nice Haitian feel. We played with many different looks. We play with full body makeup, we play with African flavors feeling more… there’s a cannibalistic ideal that we’ve been messing with for a while. We landed in this border town Tex-Mex feeling.

Of course, much of Pariah is a sex party, and I’m curious how this fits into the town’s culture. When we’re backstage with humans, Westworld boasts a futuristic vibe. When we were in Sweetwater and surrounding areas, it had a classic western feel. But much harder to place orgy in Pariah. It almost feels alien.

I’m glad to hear that you can’t include it anywhere in terms of references, because there seems to be a lot of influence there, from Close eyes and some Kubrickian things there, as well as the movie 120 days of Sodom by Pier Paolo Pasolini – one ‘70’s the movie is crazy, orgy-tastic challenges. (Laugh.) We wanted to do something epic. [Westworld showrunners Jonathan “Jonah” Nolan and Lisa Joy] always wanted to do the biggest, the best and the sexiest, so we wanted to create the most amazing sex acts you can imagine. To that effect, we had several stylists. We really curator scene T. Sometimes, to me, it almost has a medieval taste. You can’t categorize it, because it’s so unique and beautiful in a way.

Is this the version of the Roman World in the movie? The scene has some notes that feel like they might belong in that world.

I don’t think it was intentional. We just wanted to create a very sexy and very dark palette and not particularly rote or follow. We made this scene in a mausoleum in Compton. That’s where we found this location: a very narrow building where 40,000 bodies were actually buried above ground. That’s a weird place to start. It has a very haunting taste to it, right from the start. (Laugh.) It’s very bizarre.

Was it challenging to find people eager enough to join the scene?

I don’t care about that so I don’t know. We hired what they called “special extras,” “special background players,” who were willing to participate. We also have a sex stylist who makes sure everything looks choreographed in that respect. Those are all hands on the deck, silly puns so to speak. We are trying to make everything elegant and graceful, beautiful and exotic.

Ever worried that the shot has gone too far?

I think we all have a bit of a preference that keeps us from taking it too far into the world of porn and keeping it in the world of sensuality. I think that’s important.

Sweetwater was well established, and now we have Pariah on the map. Is the world of Westworld has been firmly mapped out, or is there room in the writers’ minds for future Pariahs to appear?

I think Jonah and Lisa believe the world is pretty big. I think the park could be 300 square miles, or maybe even more. There are different terrain and different geological and weather zones. You can be in many different places [locations]. It’s not just a place in the West. We’ll be exploring various terrains as we dive deeper into this series. There are many hidden treasures to come.
