Whoopi Goldberg Suspended By ABC’s ‘The View’ for Holocaust Comments

Whoopi Goldberg has been suspended by ABC’s See.

The co-host of the daytime panel show will be out of the show for two weeks after making controversial comments on Monday about Jews and the Holocaust in response to the school board’s local ban on graphic novels Maus.

ABC News President Kim Godwin announced the decision in a notice to employees Tuesday night.

“Effective immediately, I will suspend Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her false and hurtful comments,” Godwin said. “While Whoopi has apologized, I have asked her to take time to think and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our colleagues, friends, family, and Jewish community.”

“These decisions are never easy, but necessary,” she added in her memo. “Just last week, I noted that the culture at ABC News is one of direction, kindness, inclusion, respect and transparency. Whoopi’s comments do not align with those values.”

Goldberg apologized on the show earlier on Tuesday, in a segment that also included an interview with Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt.

“Yesterday on the show I missed,” Goldberg said at the start of the talk show. “[The Holocaust] was really about race, because Hitler and the Nazis considered the Jews an inferior race. Now, words matter, and mine is no exception. I’m sorry about my comments and I’m here to correct them. I am also on the side of the Jewish people.”

The controversy erupted on Monday’s show, when Goldberg spoke in a segment about Maus: “Let’s be honest about it because the Holocaust has nothing to do with race. It’s not about race. It’s not about race. It’s about the inhumanity of man to man. “

Co-host Ana Navarro responded to Goldberg, saying, “But it’s about white supremacists going after the Jews.”

“But these are two groups of white people!” Goldberg replied. “As soon as you turn it into a race, it goes down this alley. Let’s talk about it for what it is. That’s how people treat each other. It doesn’t matter whether you’re black or white, Jewish, it’s all together.”

Goldberg makes the same comment on CBS’ Late show On Monday night, she also issued an apology on her social media feeds, saying, “I’m sorry for the hurt I’ve caused.”

Good evening ABC News—

I want to reach out to all of you about Whoopi Goldberg’s comments on “The View” yesterday were misinformed, offensive and hurtful. I have made the decision to suspend Whoopi from “The View” for two weeks with immediate effect.

These decisions are never easy, but necessary.

Just last week, I noted that the culture at ABC News is one of direction, kindness, inclusion, respect, and transparency.

Whoopi’s comment doesn’t match those values.

Importantly, Whoopi had the opportunity to voice her opinions on today’s show where she does them and had an educational conversation with Jonathan Greenblatt from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

I appreciate their conversation and his acknowledgment of Whoopi’s efforts. As he tweeted, “So much gratitude @WhoopiGoldberg for inviting me to join @TheView today for an important discussion about the importance of Holocaust education. Whoopi has been a longtime ally of the Jewish community and @ADL and her apology is very welcome.”

Whoopi has shown through her actions over the years that she understands the horrors of the Holocaust and she starts the show today with that recognition.

But words matter and we must be aware of the impact of our words.

I will be making a statement below soon.

“Effective immediately, I will suspend Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her false and hurtful comments. While Whoopi has apologized, I have asked her to take time to think and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our colleagues, friends, family, and Jewish community.”
