Why ‘The Mandalorian’ Star Mercedes Varnado Will Always Check Her DMs from Now On – Beallich.Com

Like most public figures, Mercedes “Sasha Banks” Varnado shies away from her Instagram direct messages, but months ago she felt nervous checking them for a change. . Surely, the impossible like Mandalorian Creator Jon Favreau contacted Varnado through a casting director. That exchange quickly led to a FaceTime between the two of them.

“One day, for some reason, I was going through my Instagram direct messages, which I don’t normally go through, and a casting director messaged me and said, ‘Jon Favreau really wanted to interview you for something for Disney,'” Varnado said Beallich.Com. “And the next thing I knew, I got FaceTime from him and he told me about Mandalorian. I can’t even believe it. When I clicked my finger, we shot on set and now it’s here. Great.”

Varnado, who is best known as WWE’s Sasha Banks and current SmackDown Women’s Champion, plays a Mandalorian named Koska Reeves. She is also the right-hand man of Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) and a member of Bo-Katan’s Mandalorian unit known as the Nite Owls. In Mandalorian in the third episode of season two, “The Heir,” Reeves saves Baby Yoda / The Child’s life, something Varnado still finds hard to believe.

“It was amazing when I knew I was going to save him. I just wanted to cry and scream…” Varnado shared. “At the same time, it was difficult because of that trolley really heavy and with my jacket too, it was hard. So he should be really grateful – and I think he is – that I saved him. “

In a recent conversation with CHEAPVarnado also discussed the wrestling moves she incorporated into her performance, the widespread speculation surrounding her character’s identity, and Bryce Dallas Howard’s impact on her first role. she’s outside of the WWE.

On behalf of the whole world, thank you for saving Baby Yoda’s life. How does it feel to hold him in your arms?

It was great to know that I would save him. I just want to cry and scream, but I feel like I don’t have time. I just said, “Okay, let’s go! Let’s do it!” At the same time, it’s very difficult because of that trolley really heavy and with my jacket too, it was hard. So he should be really grateful – and I think he is – that I saved him. (Laughter.) So it was cool.

So do you get a very secret phone call one day? How did it all start?

One day, for some reason, I was going through my Instagram DMs, which I don’t normally go through, and a casting director texted me and said, “Jon Favreau really wants to interview you for something for Disney.” And I said, “Oh my gosh, OK!” And next thing I know, I got FaceTime from him and he told me about Mandalorian. I can’t even believe it. I said, “What? Is this real?” I’m so used to WWE and the wrestling arena that I can’t believe this is happening. When I clicked my finger, we shot on set and now it’s here. Great. At the same time, I’m the WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion, so life is really exciting and crazy right now.

THE MANDALORIAN

What did Jon and Dave (Filoni) tell you about your character’s backstory so you could incorporate that information into your performance?

Well, I don’t want to give away too much because it’s still really secret. We don’t know where it’s going, and maybe it could go somewhere else in the future. I can only express it. But they told me that we are part of Mandalorian, what is our path and why are we looking for Mando. And hopefully we will help him to help us find Darksaber. So that’s our story and really, for me, I wanted to bring the real feeling and emotion to save the Child. If someone really drowns, especially someone as legendary as Baby Yoda, you have to put everything in. I also included a lot of my wrestling characters, as well as the moves. Immediately, you see me do a falling kick, an elbow, and a fireman. Probably Star Wars The fans don’t know what it is but my fans do. So I want to bring a lot of different elements into my character that I hope one day I can explore more and more.

You’ve touched it while carrying The Child’s stroller, but how challenging is it to do the choreography in beskar armor and helmet?

It was very, very difficult. I was so used to wearing really tight, tight shorts, sparkly tops, and wearing a lot of coats, so it was really hard to put on a helmet and a wristband. But I’m grateful for wrestling because I know my body well. I can do anything, so come and try it! (Laughter.)

There was a lot of speculation about who you were playing before Summary premiered and there was a lot of speculation after people saw your hooded character in the trailer. Do you enjoy watching people get it wrong for the most part?

I didn’t pay too much attention to it. It just goes to work every day and people say I’m a Jedi. Obviously I couldn’t say anything so all I could do was smile and say, “I can’t wait to see you guys!” Every day, it’s, “You’re a Jedi! You are a Jedi! The fans said a lot of different things so I just said, “Oh my god, I hope they don’t disappoint.” But in my heart I knew they wouldn’t. So I’m happy and very happy.

Which wrestler presses you the most for information?

Everyone! I was shocked because everyone is a fan of Star Wars. When I started working after the trailer aired, from the sound guys to our supporters, everyone was a fan and had a lot of questions. I just said, “Um, I still can’t say anything. Please continue to follow. “(Laughter.)

Since this is your first time acting in a show like this, is it helpful to Bryce Dallas Howard is your director because she’s also an actress?

Bryce was unbelievable. Even before I went to shoot, she texted me. I told her I was very nervous and I didn’t know what I was doing. But then I thought to myself, “Actually, I’m an actor too.” WWE is so crazy, intense and full of excitement. And it’s live streaming. Sometimes we were given a script 30 seconds before we went out. So I also have to bring my energy and my belief that I can do this too. But she is so special and so wonderful to me. Any questions I had or any reassurance I needed, she was there right away. So I’m so grateful she’s been a part of my first anything.

On that day, what did you actually eat in the cantina?

Koska is sipping an octopus. Very delicious. My all time favorite movie is Oldboy, and there’s a scene in the movie Dae-su butts an octopus. So when they told me, I said, “Oh my gosh, will it be real?” but they told me it’s not. So I decided to do it if they wanted to, but it was a big, long udon that I had to slurp on. (Laugh.)

So what was the first outfit like? How many adjustments are needed?

Oh my gosh, that first dress try on was crazy. I can not believe it. I had to tighten it up just once, and I walked out onto the set and showed it to Jon Favreau and Bryce. They’re just like, “Wow, you look like a bad guy.” And then I went to the trailer to try on the hair. I wanted to cry, but I waited until I got back to my hotel. I said, “Whoa, this is crazy.” Again, I’m used to wearing a certain outfit in the ring. Being in a completely different role, becoming something like Star Wars, becoming a Mandalorian and wearing sacred armor, all I wanted to do was burst into tears. I’m so grateful.

And Koska’s cross braid adds another signature look to her Star Wars.

YES! It’s all the hairstylist’s idea. She just loves Star Wars; Her name is Maria Sandoval. She has worked with them for many years. So she just wanted to do something unique and different because she wanted the little girls to cosplay me. And I’ve seen a lot of girls tagging me in pictures. Great.

What is your impression when working inside? volume?

It really felt like I was on a completely different world, in a completely different galaxy. You can actually step into that set. It’s very real. I just get scared every time I’m there. I still can’t believe how they did it.

THE MANDALORIAN

So when you sit down on Mando’s ship, is the ship on stage while you’re looking at everything else on the screen?

It’s in the episode, yes. It feels very real. I legally watched the sunset and the water while on the spaceship. I don’t know how Disney and Star Wars did it, but everything they did, I felt like I was in another world.

Would you like to offer any puzzling words about Koska Reeves’ future?

There are no confusing words to say. Just like you, I’m a fan and I’m watching Mandalorian every week after I do Friday Night SmackDown. So let’s keep watching and hopefully in the future we can have Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff) and Koska Reeves back. So I don’t know, but I’ll keep an eye on it.
